1. Motivation
These policies specify how Global I-Names are resolved. They are motivated by the need to:-
Enable persistent identification of a Resource regardless of changes over time to the Resource's Global I-Name(s), I-Broker(s), or any other registration data.
-
Provide maximum resolution efficiency of Global I-Names for all users and service providers of XDI infrastructure.
-
Protect the privacy of Global I-Name Registrants and provide them with maximum control over the data associated with their Global I-Name.
-
Protect the security and integrity of XDI infrastructure.
2. Global Personal I-Name Resolution Policy
A Global Personal I-Name MUST resolve to at least one and MAY resolve to more than one Global Personal I-Number.3. Global Organizational I-Name Resolution Policy
A Global Organizational I-Name MUST resolve to at least one and MAY resolve to more than one Global Organizational I-Number.4. Primary Global I-Number Policy
If a Global I-Name resolves to more than one Global I-Number, the Registrant MUST indicate which Global I-Number shall be the primary resolution value.5. Multiple I-Name Registration Authentication Policy
If a Registrant wishes to register more than one Global I-Name to the same Global I-Number, the XDI.ORG-Accredited I-Broker MUST verify the Registrant's authentication credential(s) for the Global I-Number before submitting the registration request.6. Cross-Resolution Policy
In the V1 GSS, resolution of a Global I-Name MUST NOT return any additional Global I-Names that may be associated with the resolved Global I-Name, only the associated Global I-Numbers. Cross-resolution of Global I-Names consistent with the Registrant's privacy preferences may be provided the Registrant's XDI.ORG-Accredited I-Broker or another resolution authority. Cross-resolution services from the XDI.ORG Global Registries MAY be considered in a future version of the GSS.7. Implications
7.1. Global I-Name Registration
An XDI.ORG-Accredited I-Broker must register at least one Global I-Number for a Registrant prior to or concurrent with registration of a Global I-Name. See the GssOpSpecs.7.2. Multiple Global I-Name Registrations
If a Registrant wishes to register more than one Global I-Name, the Registrant's XDI.ORG-Accredited I-Broker should give the Registrant the choice of whether the additional Global I-Name(s) should be registered to the same Global I-Number or to a different Global I-Number. Note the latter option may be chosen for two different reasons:-
The additional Global I-Name(s) represent a different resource, or
-
The additional Global I-Name(s) represent the same resource but the registrant wishes to maintain a separate account for privacy or data control purposes.
7.3. Cross-Resolution of Global I-Names
XDI.ORG-Accredited I-Brokers should enable Registrants who register multiple Global I-Names to control cross-resolution (resolution of one i-name into another i-name). Some registrants may have a privacy preference to disallow cross-resolution; others may explicitly desire it.8. Related Policies
