1. Motivation

These policies govern Global I-Numbers reserved by XDI.ORG for community purposes. They are motivated by the need to:

2. Background

See the Inumber Syntax Policies (GssPolicies/InumberSyntax) for the hexadecimal, IPv6-based format and structure of Global I-Numbers assigned by the XDI.ORG Global Registries. Due to the fact that Global Personal I-Numbers and Global Organizational I-Numbers are structured as Cross-References, it is not necessary to further reserved a special addressing range with these Global I-Number types. Thus the following policy applies only to Global Independent I-Numbers.

3. Reserved Global Independent I-Number Policy

For Global Independent I-Numbers assigned according to the Global Independent I-Number Syntax Policy, the range below and including the hexadecimal value "1000" and the upper-end value "FFFF" are reserved for XDI.ORG and MUST NOT be registered by XDI.ORG Agents.

4. Global Independent Test I-Number Policy

For Global Independent I-Number "!!1000" MUST NOT be assigned by the GRS. It is reserved for internal testing of XRI resolver and I-Broker implementations.

5. Implications

5.1. Future Expansion

This policy reserves 1/16th of the Global Independent I-Number space (or 4097 out of 65536 possible I-Numbers) for special purposes by XDI.ORG. In addition the Global Independent I-Number Syntax Policy inherently reserves Cross-References as a future expansion option. Both approaches preserve future options for expansion or optimization of the Global Independent I-Number space.

5.2. Global General I-Numbers

Many of the standard requirements for reserved identifiers in global registries may be met by Global General I-Numbers (those registered under the GCS "+" symbol). The V1 GSS does not include specifications for Global General I-Numbers, but they will be included in a future version.
